Archello Awards 2023 Finalist – Robert Olnick Pavilion

Museum building of the Year

The Robert Olnick Pavilion designed by architects Alberto Campo Baeza and Miguel Quismondo is an extension of the MagaZZino Museum, Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu's Museum of Italian Arte Povera in Cold Spring, New York. The current MagaZZino is a superb building, designed and built by Miguel Quismondo. It has proven to be so resoundingly successful that it has now outgrown its size, which is why the Olnick Spanu family asked us to build this extension.

The new Pavilion has two floors and is a straight rectangular parallelepiped-shaped building of reinforced concrete, which will house the Murano glass collection, the cafeteria and more exhibition spaces. Special emphasis is placed on the main exhibit area, which is a white, cubic, isotropic space that will house temporary exhibitions and serve as a focal point of the museum…

Archello Awards 2023 Longlist – Kagami Ryuichi Sakamoto

Theatre building of the Year

Archello Awards 2023 has revealed its longlist for Theatre Building of the Year. The longlists celebrate the very best architecture projects and building products selected from over 1,000 entries for the very first edition of our awards program. The 7 projects listed here range from amphitheaters, to dance halls and floating performance spaces, and were constructed across 6 countries including Bahrain, Finland, Taiwan and the USA.

This commission is the result of a collaboration with Tin Drum, The Shed, Factory International and MQA for the architecture and spatial design of KAGAMI.

Conceived as a new type of mixed reality concert, KAGAMI is a 1-hour digital piano performance by award winning composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023). The concert, directed by Todd Eckert, blends the real world with a 3D pre-recorded never-before seen performance through optically transparent devices.

Located in the Shed, this show wraps and divides the Griffin Theater with black drapes into two opposite but complementary spaces: The Induction Area and the Performance Area. In the first room, Ryuichi surrounds the Audience; in the second room, his digital self is surrounded by the Audience.

Archello Awards 2023 Longlist – Stella´s Cucina

Café / Restaurant of the Year

Archello Awards 2023 has revealed its longlist for Theatre Building of the Year. The longlists celebrate the very best architecture projects and building products selected from over 1,000 entries for the very first edition of our awards program. The 7 projects listed here range from amphitheaters, to dance halls and floating performance spaces, and were constructed across 6 countries including Bahrain, Finland, Taiwan and the USA.

Originally conceived as a cannabis lounge, Stella’s Cucina sits in the core of a new commercial building facing Boulder’s Historic District. As the enterprise could not be seen from the exterior, the space does not establish relationships with the city; therefore, we envisioned the project as an inheritor of the Speakeasy underground scene of the American Prohibition era and we sought the opportunity to bring natural light through a central skylight. This idea of an old-fashioned, elegant, but concealed space, profoundly influenced the design of the project. Only an "S" indicates Stella's entrance on Walnut Street, hidden behind a towering 12 feet aluminum door under a perforated metal canopy.

From entering the building to siting at your table, Stella's is an entirely new hospitality experience, one shrouded in elegance and mystery: as one opens the aluminum door, the space is compressed with a curved white ceiling. The existing brick wall on one side and its reflection along the opposite mirrored wall, escort guests to the interior. In the lobby, an oak wall with a check-in window awaits the visitors, where an unseen bouncer cards the guests. From there, a hidden wooden door reveals a dark corridor, where the host welcomes the visitors and walks them through a compressed and dimmed space with wood walls…
