Piero Gilardi: Tappeto Natura

MQ Architecture had the opportunity to contribute to the highly anticipated exhibition of renowned Italian artist Piero Gilardi at Magazzino Italian Art, providing both the exhibition design and technical assistance. Our tasks included planning the layout, preparing construction documents, creating renderings, and collaborating with the museum team and commissioner.

Given the significance of the artist and exhibit, ensuring a cohesive and immersive layout was crucial. We focused on highlighting Gilardi’s unique style and message while considering installation logistics and visitor flow. Through careful planning, we created an exhibit that showcased Gilardi’s work in a captivating and meaningful way.

Piero Gilardi’s artistic journey began on a Sunday walk in Turin in the 1960s, where he observed a pile of trash and felt compelled to “recreate” an ideal and uncontaminated nature. This inspiration eventually led to his Tappeto-Natura series, a collection of sculptural works using artificial materials to imitate organic scenes. From rippling ocean waves to snowy clearings, these pieces rest throughout the museum’s gallery floor and walls, inviting a direct interaction with the viewer’s mind and body.
